Our North Island 6hr Adventure Race for year 11-13 students took place in Rotorua at the end of June and 24 teams from secondary schools around the North Island took part. The event started in downtown Rotorua at the RAVE Arts Village, with the teams of 8 making their way around the Goverment Gardens and Sulphur Point to a series of compulsory checkpoints and challenges in order to gain clues that would earn them the map for the next section of the course. Stage 2 was a 25km Mountain Bike ride on trails that led into the Whakarewarewa Forest and the final transition near The Redwoods. From here the teams spent what time they had remaining, up to 6hrs, on a foot rogaine that include 30 remote checkpoints and four bonus team challenges. With the finish time cut-off of 3pm for all teams and penalties for being late (not to mention cold pizza!) there was a lot of strategic planning and time management decisions that needed to be worked through by the teams in order to maximise their score.

Our 6hr Adventure Race is all about getting out and having fun with your team mates and is set at a level that caters for all abilities and experience. We also use the event as a selection race for the following years Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge Final, for those teams that want to put in the extra effort to train and prepare. The top 3 mixed teams earn their school a spot in this final.

Congratulations to Taradale High (Hawkes Bay), Francis Douglas/Sacred Heart Girls (Taranaki) and Takapuna Grammar (Auckland) for filling the top 3 places in this years event, we will see you at our Tongariro Centre in May next year for Hillary Challenge 16.

Our final NavQuest rogaine event of the year took place around the streets, parks, walkways and beach front of Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast on 5 July. We had a great turnout, on what was a perfect early winters day, to explore an interesting part of the lower North Island. Thanks to Orienteering Hutt Valley and in particular, Michael Wood for helping plan the event and our fantastic sponsors – Bivouac Outdoor, KEEN Footwear, BUFF Headwear, Lactic Turkey events and Wilderness Magazine for providing some cool prizes to give away.

GET2GO Regional Events

The 8th annual nationwide Get2Go series is in full swing at the moment with 9 of the 12 events having successfully taken place in the North Island, with the final 3 events scheduled for mid-September in Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin. Over 190 teams (1520 students so far) have registered to take part in one of the 12 events, which is a great turnout.

The Get2Go is all about getting into the outdoors and experiencing a little multi-sport and advenuture race fun in teams of 8. The events are designed to cater for students with little or no experience, right through to those that are keen and train hard to try and win their local regions event and earn the right to represent their region in the 5-day long National Get2Go Final held at our Great Barrier Island Centre in December.

Check out the footage below of students trying to navigate their way through the water with buckets on their heads – one of the many challenges in the Get2Go event!

Kayaking with a bucket on your head can be a bit interesting. That’s why its in the #Get2Go challenge.
