Tongariro Centre Update

Janet at the 40th_Edit Hillary Outdoors Tongariro Centre Manager, Janet Prier (pictured left), updates us on what’s been happening around the Centre over winter and the upcoming Open Day…

There has been lots of activity here at Tongariro and we have been making the most of the fantastic winter conditions.

We have a huge variety of activities on offer to make the most of our Alpine environment.

Many of our schools have enjoyed a day on the ski field either skiing or snowboarding as part of their programme and many have also enjoyed a day either climbing a mountain or learning winter skills. Some of our school groups have also been lucky enough to camp out for the night in the snow either in snow caves or tents depending on the conditions. This has been a memorable experience, if not sometimes a little uncomfortable!

Our Certificate students are away this week on their winter expedition traversing the Tongariro National Park and intending to climb Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro, while the Diploma students have been doing some exciting climbing in great winter conditions on the Pinnacles.

We have also been running winter skills courses for a variety of clients including GNS and St Peter’s School and still have one place available on an Intermediate alpine skills course on 25th – 27th September.

We have run a series of one-day avalanche awareness courses for skiers and climbers and these have also been extremely popular. This photo (above left) was taken on one we ran for the staff of a local guiding and activity company “Adventure Outdoors”.

On days off you will see most of the staff team out climbing or skiing. Check out the photo above of some of the team on a ski touring trip at Tukino.

So, if you feel you have missed out on all the excitement this winter, it’s not too late to contact us for some winter skills or avalanche awareness training or keep an eye on our website for winter courses in 2016.

Hillary Outdoors new signageBack at base, visitors to the Centre will hopefully be impressed with all our new signage. The eclectic mix of old signage is now all gone and it has been replaced with our new Hillary Outdoors signs which are looking great thanks to the hard work of Andie at the Auckland Support Office who designed them and Pete our Maintenance Manager who braved the freezing weather to erect them all.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit us, or you would like to come back to see us, we are holding an Open Day on 17th October. There will be activities and food, all free of charge, as well as the opportunity to go in the prize draw to win a 5-day holiday programme for a 14-18 year old. Please keep a check our website and Facebook page for information.

Finally we are welcoming two new instructors in September; Sierra Stretton and Janina Gould. Both have studied at AUT and we are looking forward to working with them and making them feel part of the team here at Tongariro.

We hope you have all enjoyed your winter as much as we have and look forward to seeing some of you at our Open Day.
