Our Events Manager, Darren Ashmore guides us through what Events are taking place this year…

We have an exciting programme of 20 secondary school outdoor adventure events lined up for 2016.

All of our events are designed to cater for all levels of skill and experience, so all students with a reasonable level of fitness and positive attitude can easily participate. Not only are they a chance for your students to get outside and engage in some different and unique physical activity, they also develop some great teamwork and interpersonal skills – communication, time management, self and team leadership, self-confidence, decision making, problem solving, strategic thinking, working with others, working under pressure…etc. So come along and join in the fun!

The registrations for all events are NOW OPEN!

Hillary Outdoors Adventure EventsWe are kicking off a new Senior Get2Go Challenge for year 11-13 students this year, with four events in the North Island. These are taking the place of our NavQuest events and will be a bit like a mini version of our Hillary Challenge 6hr Adventure Races. For teams of 4 students, they will be 3hrs long and will run between 10.30pm-1.30pm to give you plenty of time to travel to/from the event on the day, even if you live in a neighbouring region to where the event is being held. You are more than welcome to bring as many teams as you wish to these events. If these events prove popular the plan is to expand the number of events in 2017. Click here for more details.

These events continue to be as popular as ever with over 1600 students taking part in 2016. We have now had over 14,000 students take part in these events in the last 10 years. Team places are limited to just 24 teams of 8 at each event, so get in quick. Click here for more details.

The Otago/Southland junior Get2Go Challenge event has always been the most popular in the country, often reaching capacity months before the event. So this year we are splitting the region in half (well sort of) and launching another event in Queenstown for Central Otago and Southland Schools. In fact schools in Southland can choose to attend either one (but only one!) of the two events in Queenstown or Dunedin.

This year we will again have two Hillary Challenge 6hr Adventure Races, on in Christchurch for South Island schools on 12 June and one in Taupo for North Island schools on 26 June. The South Island event has not received many entries over the last couple of years due to its September timing being a busy one for senior students, so hopefully with the event moving to June we can get a lot more teams signing up! Team places are limited to just 30 teams of 8 at each event, so get in quick. Click here for more details.

Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions of queries about any of our events. If you are no longer the best contact for your school please let me know so I can update my database.

The 16th Hillary Challenge final is now less than 2 months away. This is the ultimate outdoor team challenge for secondary school students in New Zealand and requires enormous commitment to training and preparation for the 12 lucky schools that make it into the final each year. This year we are again planning to have ‘live tracking’ of the teams on the two-day expedition stage of the event (11/12 May), but also hope to include this on the 50km multisport race on the 5th and final day of the event. Check out our social media channels for all of the updates and coverage.

The twelve schools/teams taking part in this years final are –

  • Thames High (Waikato)
  • New Plymouth Girls and Boys High (Taranaki)
  • Whangarei Girls and Boys High (Northland)
  • Trident High (Bay of Plenty)
  • Taradale High (Hawkes Bay)
  • Francis Douglas and Sacred Heart (Taranaki)
  • Fiordland College (Southland)
  • Westlake Girls and Boys High (Auckland)
