Hillary Outdoors Tongariro hosts approximately 3500 school students each year on courses ranging from 1-day kayak programmes to 11-day intensive development programmes.  What some people may not realise is that we have other very special groups of students here who are training to become Outdoor Instructors…these are our Tertiary students. With only 12 on our Certificate programme and 8 on our Diploma programme, they are a very exclusive group of people.  There are few places around the world that offer the level of Tertiary training that is found at Hillary Outdoors Tongariro and our graduates go on to work in many different locations and roles, both nationally and internationally, with jobs ranging from guiding in Nepal to running a rafting company in Turangi.

This year we have 6 females and 14 males, ranging in age from 18 to 29 years old.  Each of these students has come from a very different place – school, welding, lifeguarding, farm-hand, hospitality – though most of them have worked with youth at some point.  They all come here with one purpose, to learn outdoors skills – kayaking, caving, rock, alpine, risk management – and more importantly, to gain the skills that enable them to work with groups and to pass on these skills and their love of the outdoors to others.

Right now they are at the half-way point through the year and in a couple of months we will be bringing you some of their individual stories. If you would like to know more about our tertiary programmes, take a look at our website tertiary pages and download a 2017 prospectus.
