Tongariro Centre Update – Trustees get active at Tongariro

hillary-outdoors_janetHillary Outdoors Tongariro Centre Manager Janet Prier (pictured left) comments on recent activities that have been happening at the Tongariro Centre….

With the winter season well and truly under way we have enjoyed some fine bluebird alpine days and also endured some long periods of wet, cold, and windy weather over the last couple of months. The instructors have done an amazing job of making sure the students have a great week, whatever the weather brings, using any windows of opportunity to ensure all the students get up into the snow at some point during their visit.

Most of our schools have taken the opportunity to spend a day up the mountain either skiing or snowboarding and many have also enjoyed a winter camping experience up high in the snow.

Our Tertiary Certificate group were blessed with five days of perfect weather for their winter expedition, allowing alpine ascents of all three volcanoes; something that the weather hasn’t allowed us to do in the past few years.

The trustees (see picture below) also enjoyed fine alpine conditions for their recent visit to Tongariro. A good time was had by all; some trustees managed to fit in a ski day or some mountain biking on the Saturday, then on Sunday most enjoyed a stunning morning at Taranaki Falls where they tackled the 30m abseil before settling down to the business of the Trust meeting later in the afternoon. Staff and trustees then enjoyed sharing a meal and a team discussion on sustainability on Sunday night, followed by a look at how the Centre operates the following morning. It was great to host the Trust meeting at the Centre and staff were really appreciative that the Trust were prepared to give up their weekend to come visit us.

We are now getting ready to host the NZOIA Symposium at the end of September; this is the annual gathering of people from the outdoor industry from across the country and we feel very privileged to be hosting the Symposium for the second time.

Coming into spring we are looking pretty busy right up until the end of the year, so if you still want to book a course for your school or a place on the Holiday Programme for one of your children, please get in touch as soon as possible.
