Events Round Up

hillary-outdoors_darrenAn update on all the latest Events news from our Events Manager, Darren Ashmore (pictured left)…

We are nearly at the end of another busy year for our outdoor adventure events programme. Just under 2500 secondary school students from around 140 schools across the country took part in one of our 20 Get2Go and Hillary Challenge events in 2017.

Our events are about encouraging students to get out of the classroom to work together with their teammates on some cool challenges while utilising the skills that might be found in the sport of Adventure Racing. All events cater to a range of experience levels and the core disciplines are typically Mountain Biking, Orienteering/Navigation, Kayak/SUP, Ropes/Climbing.

The core disciplines are tied together with important ‘team’ skills such as –

  • the ability to communicate honestly and effectively
  • the ability to work together to solve problems
  • the ability to make quick decisions under pressure
  • self and group leadership
  • time management
  • establishing trust
  • the ability to recognise strengths and weaknesses of team members
  • compassion for your fellow team members
  • environmental awareness

Over the years we have seen many students participate in our Junior Get2Go when in year 9 and 10 and then go on to participate in our Senior Get2Go and Hillary Challenge events. Many get so inspired through these experiences that they go on to participate in one of the core disciplines in their adult lives. Several develop such a passion that they take it to the elite level and now race internationally in Adventure Racing teams, with others having represented New Zealand in events like the Xterra World Champs, World Orienteering Champs and Coast to Coast Multi-sport World Champs. We love seeing this and hearing about the experiences of participants in past events.

Get2Go Final

Following our successful 12 event regional series in term 3 that saw 1600 students participate, we now have the top 12 junior adventure racing teams from around the country joining us for the National Get2Go Final at our Great Barrier Island Centre from 4-9th December. The 5-day long challenge will test the teams in a whole range of outdoors skills as well as their stamina, endurance and ability to work well together as a team. The 2015 champions Waimea College from Nelson will be back to try and defend their title. They will be joined by the following schools –

Whangarei Girls/Boys High

Takapuna Grammar

Botany Downs Secondary College

Auckland Grammar/Auckland Dio

St Pauls/Waikato Dio

Trident High

Taradale High

New Plymouth Girls/Boys High

Kapiti College

Cashmere High

Fiordland College

Dates and registration for 2017 events

The dates for our 2017 programme of 20 events have been set and information about these is up on our website. The links to the online registration forms for each event will go live at the start of Term 1 and registrations will be taken on a first in first served basis, so be sure to get in early as most events have a limited number of team places. Remember all our Get2Go (Junior and Senior) and Hillary Challenge 6hr events are designed to cater for students with all levels of experience. A little bit of fitness and a positive ‘give it a go’ attitude it all that is needed to take part in the fun and enjoy the events.
