Our Chief Executive, Graham Seatter (pictured left) talks about an exciting opportunity to join the Hillary Outdoors team…

After a stellar year in 2016 we are looking to appoint a new Centre Manager for our Tongariro Outdoor Education Centre as Janet Prier is moving into the role of Programme Manager with Mike Brenton retiring as from 31 January.

Following her five years as Centre Manager Janet is moving into a role that will see her working more closely with our school customers and our student clients, which nicely recognises her strengths and passions while allowing her to continue to make a significant difference to our business – and what a great 2 i/c she will be!

The appointment of a new Centre Manger is a key decision as the new person will come into a well-established business – we have been here for more than 45 years – and one that is in growth as we move positively forward from the challenges of the last decade.  Our 5-day school bookings at the Tongariro Centre grew by 20% in 2016 compared to 2015 – that is an increase of 600 students – and forward bookings for 2017 indicate continued growth into the New Year.

We are now facing challenges of capacity constraints and we have real pressure from existing bookings – any schools looking to confirm bookings for 2017 should act immediately!

It is interesting to reflect on the reasons for this growth.  Primarily it must come down to the quality of our people as our programmes are obviously recognised as providing significant benefits to young people.  In addition there may be other factors explaining this growth, such as a greater awareness of matters related to safety as schools look to off-load safety management to recognised operators.

We have established a partnership with AUT in order to obtain high quality objective research on the outcomes of our programmes.  Third-party research has always been recognised as something that we should undertake and we are delighted to be working with AUT and their team of experts in this area.

Finally – very bests wishes for the festive season and I hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing break over that period.
