Registrations Now Open!…2017 Events Programme

hillary-outdoors_darrenAn update on all the latest Events news from our Events Manager, Darren Ashmore (pictured left)…

We have an exciting programme of 20 secondary school outdoor adventure events lined up for 2017.

All of our events are designed to cater for all levels of skill and experience, so all students with a reasonable level of fitness and positive attitude can easily participate. Not only are they a chance for your students to get outside and engage in some different and unique physical activity, they also develop some great teamwork and interpersonal skills – communication, time management, self and team leadership, self-confidence, decision making, problem solving, strategic thinking, working with others, working under pressure…etc. So come along and join in the fun!

The registrations for all events are NOW OPEN!

  • SENIOR GET2GO CHALLENGE (Year 11-13)

We are kicking off the year with four Senior Get2Go Challenge events in March. These a bit like a mini version of our Hillary Challenge 6hr Adventure Races. For teams of 4 students, they will be 3hrs long and will run between 10.30pm-1.30pm to give you plenty of time to travel to/from the event on the day, even if you live in a neighbouring region to where the event is being held. You are more than welcome to bring as many teams as you wish to these events. As these events grow we will look to expand the number of events in the future. We already have lots of South Island schools keen to get involved. Click here for more details.

  • JUNIOR GET2GO CHALLENGE (Year 9 and 10)

These events continue to be as popular as ever with over 1600 students taking part in 2016. This year will see the 17,000th student take part in a junior regional event. We think that is pretty cool! There are a total of 12 events across the country in Term 3 and team places are limited to just 24 teams of 8 at each event, so get in quick. Click here for more details.

  • HILLARY CHALLENGE 6hr ADVENTURE RACES (Year 11-13)

This year we will again have two Hillary Challenge 6hr Adventure Races, on in Canterbury (Geraldine area) for South Island schools on 28 May and one in Rotorua for North Island schools on 18 June. Team places are limited to just 30 teams of 8 at each event, so get in quick. Click here for more details.

THE GENESIS ENERGY HILLARY CHALLENGE FINAL

The 17th Hillary Challenge final is just over 2 months away. This is the ultimate outdoor team challenge for secondary school students in New Zealand and requires enormous commitment to training and preparation for the 12 lucky schools that make it into the final each year. This year we are again planning to have ‘live tracking’ of the teams on the two-day expedition and the 50km multisport stages of the event. Check out our social media channels for all of the updates and coverage.

The twelve schools/teams taking part in this years final are –

  • Whangarei Girls and Boys High (Northland)
  • New Plymouth Girls and Boys High (Taranaki)
  • Thames High (Waikato)
  • Havelock North High (Hawkes Bay)
  • Trident High (Bay of Plenty)
  • Taradale High (Hawkes Bay)
  • Francis Douglas and Sacred Heart (Taranaki)
  • Cashmere High (Canterbury)
  • St Andrew College (Canterbury)
  • Middleton Grange (Canterbury)
  • Takapuna Grammar (Auckland)
  • Waimea College (Nelson)

We are bound to see some great action as there are so many talented athletes taking part, including Cameron Jones from Waimea College who recently won (overall) the 2-day The Coast to Coast Multisport Race, New Zealand race, at the age of just 16! Cameron was in the winning Get2Go Final team in 2015 and will be lining up in the 17th Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge final this May. Congratulations Cameron!
