The price includes:

  • All meals from arrival evening dinner to departure day lunch
  • Accommodation from the night before the course starts to the night before the course ends
  • Rental of specialist gear and equipment
  • Transport to and from sites once at Hillary Outdoors Tongariro

The North Island has many classic climbing venues and some of the best are within a short drive from our Tongariro Centre. We have access to varied sites providing different rock types, and catering to the climbers needs.

We offer four courses:

  • Meet The Rock – Experience rock climbing and abseiling
  • Take The Lead – Learn to sport-climb
  • Racks and Cracks – Learn to trad-climb
  • Hang in There – Anchors and rescue techniques


Each course is 2 days (with a 5pm arrival the evening prior)

Meet The Rock

Programme Overview

Experience Rock Climbing and abseiling at locations around the Tongariro National Park. Learn about climbing techniques, safety, communication, equipment requirements and more.
This course is designed for people who have limited or nil rock climbing experience.


  • The ability to tie climbing knots and an understanding on when/where to use them

Take The Lead

Programme Overview

Outdoor climbing for indoor climbers. Take another step on your climbing pathway. Progress to safe leading on placed bolt protection. Learn about safe protection techniques, appropriate use, safety and how to retreat from a climb.

  • Set up and clean climbs
  • Personal safety
  • Managing belays

Racks and Cracks

Programme Overview

An in-depth look at climbing on placed protection, appropriate equipment, safe equipment use and building belay anchors. This is not a course for beginner climbers.


  • Learn to place a variety of rock protection
  • Leading on routes using your protection
  • Ability to select climbs based on your ability
  • Managing belays on placed protection

Hang in There

Programme Overview

Take a technical look or refresher at building your own climbing or abseiling systems or anchors and methods for rescuing yourself or climbing partner. A great course if you have an upcoming instructor training assessment, want to get a bit technical with your skills and safety when pushing your climbing capabilities.
