Torpedo7 Rogaine Series

What is the Torpedo7 Rogaine Series?

NavquestDue to the popularity of our Torpedo7 Get2Go Junior and Torpedo7 Hillary Challenge 6-hour adventure races we have listened to your feedback and are organising some more opportunities for you and your friends to get into the outdoors for a bit of team fun.

The Torpedo7 Rogaine Series are navigation based team challenges for any students in years 9-13. Each challenge is 2-hours in duration and a mix between orienteering and rogaining. The challenges are organised by Hillary Outdoors with the expert assistance from the local outdoors enthusiasts. Each team can be made up of 2-4 students and the goal is simply to navigate to as many checkpoints as possible and then make it back to the finish line before the clock ticks down to zero.

The checkpoints on the course will all be optional and worth a different score based on their location and difficulty to find. The navigation in general isn’t super hard, so as long as you have a general understanding of how to read a map you will be fine. You will also need someone who can tell the time, as you can’t afford to be late to the finish, because as soon as the 120 min time limit is up you start getting penalised by losing the points you have gained on the course. It’s really up to you how fast you run, walk, hop, skip or crawl your way around the course. Just don’t be late back!

We will give you a specially prepared map (sometimes more than one type/style/scale) and occasionally an aerial photo as well to test your skills. All of the checkpoints will be marked on the maps for you and the team with the biggest score at the end wins. There will be some cool spot prizes and giveaways, so get your team together now and start planning.

Who is it for?

The Torpedo7 Rogaine Series is for any students in years 9-13. The events will be suitable for all levels of experience and getting involved and participating is what it is all about. You certainly don’t need to be an elite athlete, or even an athlete at all to join in the fun. If you have taken part in our Torpedo7 Get2Go Jr (for year 9 and 10 students) this will be the perfect ‘next step’. It will also be a great training opportunity for anyone taking on our Torpedo7 Hillary Challenge 6-hour adventure races being held in May/June.

Use these events to gain school credits!

Each year we have many schools that use these events (as well as our Hillary Challenge 6hr Adventure Races) to work various Achievement Standard into their programmes to enable their students to gain credits . The typical ones they use are these –

Level 1 – 1.1 (90962), 1.5 (90966), 1.7 (90968), 1.9 (90970)

Level 2 – 2.6 (91332), 2.7 (91333)

Level 3 – 3.3 (91500)

On the day

For all events registration will open at 10.00am on each day and there will be a briefing at the event HQ at 10.30am. Maps and course information will then be issued and you will have about 20 minutes to plan where you are going to go. You will then have 2 hours (from 11.00am to 1.00pm) to find as many checkpoints as possible.

Of could you can do more than one event if you like. If you live in a region that neighbours one where an event is being held, we have timed the events to allow for travel to/from the venue that should fit nicely into a school day without the need to find accommodation, unless of course you are really keen and want to do all 6 events!

Oh, did we mention the prizes? A prize-giving will happen shortly after the finish and we give away some very cool spot prizes courtesy of our fantastic event sponsors.
