Avalanche Skills Course 2 (ASC2)

This 4-day course is designed for individuals who spend time in an alpine environment, outside of ski area boundaries. It focuses on applying the skills of personal preparation, route decision making and rescue skills. The course focuses on avoiding the need for avalanche related rescue, but also dedicates time to learning the technical skills required for rescuing a companion or small party.

This course is approved by the Mountain Safety Council and utilises the syllabus and course materials provided by them. This course meets the pre-requisite qualification for the NZOIA Alpine 1 award.

*This course was previously known as 4-Day Backcountry Avalanche Risk Management.

Note: The cost includes food, instruction, accommodation at Iwikau Village (at Whakapapa Ski Field), and use of specialist alpine gear. Please make your own transport arrangements to get to/from Whakapapa at the beginning and end of the course. You are welcome to arrive at your accommodation at Iwikau Village on Saturday evening, the 4-day course will be held on the mountain from Sunday morning until Wednesday afternoon.
