Be a role model for exceptional outdoor education at Hillary Outdoors Coromandel. As a Senior Instructor, you’ll deliver high-quality programmes across our marine, bush, and conservation environments, support the development of other instructors, and help create powerful learning experiences for young people in a world-class coastal setting.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and capable Senior Instructor to join our instructional team at the Hillary Outdoors Coromandel Centre. This is a hands on delivery focused role for an outdoor educator who can independently lead programmes, take Instructor-in-Charge responsibility when required, and actively support and mentor other instructors in the field.
Senior Instructors are trusted key members of our team. You will deliver the Hillary Outdoors core product (secondary school programmes), contribute to specialist and tertiary courses, and play a key role in maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and professionalism across daily programme delivery.
Purpose of the Role
The Senior Instructor delivers outdoor and adventure programmes that are safe, engaging, and aligned with Hillary Outdoors’ educational kaupapa. The role contributes to programme quality by role modelling best practice, supporting trainee and developing instructors, and actively participating in the ongoing improvement of delivery, safety systems, and centre culture.

Our Coromandel Marine and Conservation Centre is set on a stunning 340-hectare coastal property surrounded by native bush and protected marine areas, providing a unique base for learning in coastal, marine, and conservation contexts.
About You
You are a confident, experienced outdoor instructor who thrives on delivering high-quality programmes and supporting others to grow. You are comfortable leading groups independently, enjoy mentoring less experienced instructors, and bring strong judgement, communication, and professionalism to your work.
You’ll bring:
- Significant experience delivering outdoor education programmes independently.
- Strong instructional credibility across marine, bush, and/or rock environments.
- Demonstrated leadership through role modelling, coaching, or supporting other instructors.
- A solid understanding of outdoor safety management systems and risk management.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a close-knit team.
- A genuine commitment to Hillary Outdoors’ values and kaupapa of learning through challenge and adventure.

We are seeking outdoor instructors with relevant experience and qualifications, along with a valid driver’s license. Ideal candidates will hold NZOIA qualifications, demonstrating their expertise and commitment to delivering exceptional outdoor experiences.
