We offer both introductory and intermediate Alpine Skills courses at the best alpine climbing area in the North Island!

Mountaineering is an activity that requires extensive planning, constant focus, and extended periods of high effort. Within an hour of our base at Hillary Outdoors Tongariro, we can be high on Mt Ruapehu getting ready to take on some spectacular routes on ice, snow and mixed terrain. There are beautiful gullies, exciting faces, and fun ridge lines to climb. This is the ideal training ground for mountaineering further afield.

Alpine – Introductory 2-day course

This is a brief introduction to the alpine environment giving you the skills to travel safely in basic winter alpine environments. After the 2 days, you should be able to confidently choose terrain within your capabilities.

We focus on the introductory skills needed to get about safely on the snow in a winter alpine environment including:

  • Safe and efficient skills using an ice axe, crampons or walking poles
  • Appropriate terrain and route selection
  • Obtaining and understanding weather forecasts
  • Alpine navigation
  • Equipment and clothing available and how to use it correctly.

The cost includes food, accommodation, instruction, use of specialist alpine gear, and travel to and from the mountain each day. (Please make your own transport arrangements to get to/from our Tongariro Centre at the beginning and end of the course).

Alpine – Intermediate 2-day course

If you are seeking to extend your personal capabilities in the winter alpine environment then join us on our intermediate alpine skills course. After a quick refresh of your basic personal skills, we introduce ropes and anchors allowing you safer access to more winter alpine terrain and extending your climbing and travel capabilities. Upon completion of the course you will have gained skills to complete alpine routes up to Grade 2.

We focus on the intermediate skills needed to get about safely on a steep or roped environment including:

  • Safe and efficient skills using ropes
  • Climbing and abseiling techniques
  • Appropriate alpine anchors
  • Alpine navigation and climbing route selection
  • Technical equipment and safe, appropriate use.

The cost includes food, accommodation, instruction, use of specialist alpine gear, and travel to and from the mountain each day. (Please make your own transport arrangements to get to/from our Tongariro Centre at the beginning and end of the course).
