Explorer Day Programme – Tongariro
If you’re based near Tongariro, our day programme is the perfect way for local 11 to 12-year-old students to experience all the adventure, fun, and connection of Hillary Outdoors without staying overnight. Sign up for the full 5 days, or pick and choose what days you will come.
The action-packed days based at the Tongariro Centre are full of outdoor challenges, team-building, and personal growth. You’ll hike, climb, problem-solve, and explore the wild, while making new friends and building lasting confidence. The only difference? You’ll head home each evening to rest for the next day’s adventure.
On arrival each morning, you’ll team up with the group and instructor to shape the day ahead. There’s no set schedule; activities are tailored to your group’s goals, interests, and the weather.
Come ready for a week (or day!) of discovery, connection, and fun. You’ll head home with great stories, new skills, friendships, and the kind of confidence that sticks with you. It’s the perfect way to experience the Hillary Holidays spirit while staying close to home.

As part of our commitment to our local community, we’re delighted to offer a special community rate for our Tongariro Day programme in September 2025.
Travel to and from the Centre: Daily shuttles will pick up participants at 8.30am from Tūrangi or Waimarino (National Park) and drop off at 4.30pm.
Food: Make sure to send a lunchbox sufficient for a day of outdoor adventure.

Who is this for? Ages 11-12
Enrolment: Students interested in joining this holiday programme will need to request a mentor from their community to fill out the referee form. For more information, click on the ‘Referee form & info’ button.
