Your First Step to Becoming a Professional Outdoor Instructor
Start your journey in the adventure and tourism industry with this hands-on, full-time programme. The Level 4 Certificate is designed to build the essential technical skills, leadership confidence, and safety awareness required to enter the workforce.
Located around Tongariro National Park, you will balance theoretical knowledge with intensive practical training in real-world outdoor settings.
What skills will I learn in the Level 4 Certificate?
You will develop a versatile toolkit across multiple outdoor disciplines, including:
- Bush & Navigation: Hiking, expedition planning, and land navigation.
- Climbing: Fundamentals of alpine and rock climbing.
- Water Activities: River safety and white water kayaking basics.
- Leadership: Group facilitation and interpersonal communication.
- Safety: Risk management and decision-making in the outdoors.
- Wellbeing: Understanding Hauora and wellbeing in outdoor contexts.
How does the learning process work?
This is an immersive, “learn-by-doing” programme. You will spend your time:
- Applying classroom theory directly to outdoor practice.
- Training in diverse environments to build adaptability.
- Developing leadership skills by working with real groups.
- Learning to manage safety and risk in dynamic, real-life situations.
What are my career options after the Level 4 Certificate?
Completing this certificate opens several doors:
- Further Study: Progress to the New Zealand Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Education (Level 5).
- Employment: Secure entry-level roles as an outdoor instructor, guide, or adventure tourism assistant.
- Academic Progression: Use your skills as a foundation for further study in Education, Tourism, Sport, or Science.

Yes! Hillary Outdoors offers up to two tertiary scholarships annually, valued at $4,500 each, for students who identify as Māori.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Identify as Māori
- Provide a letter of support from your iwi, hapū, marae, or Māori community leader.
- Be enrolled in a Hillary Outdoors’ Tertiary Programme
