Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Education (Level 5)

Advance your career with professional outdoor instructor training

Take the next step toward becoming a highly skilled professional. The Level 5 Diploma is an advanced, hands-on programme designed for those ready to move into independent instructor roles.

This qualification focuses on high-level programme delivery, sophisticated risk management, and leadership in complex, dynamic environments.

The Diploma shifts focus from basic skills to professional mastery, including:

  • Instructional Leadership: Leading and teaching groups in diverse outdoor settings.
  • Advanced Risk Management: Developing and implementing safety systems.
  • Technical Expertise: Advanced skills in bush, rock, river, and alpine environments.
  • Professional Communication: Decision-making and leadership under pressure.
  • Programme Design: Planning and delivering high-quality outdoor experiences.
  • Cultural Competency: Integrating Hauora and wellbeing into outdoor practice.

A defining feature of the Level 5 Diploma is the opportunity to work with real clients at Hillary Outdoors Tongariro. To prepare you for immediate employment, you will:
