2,000 young people are waiting for the chance to come to Hillary Outdoors.
We want to get that number to zero.

For many, the only thing standing in the way is money. The Hillary Step Scholarship helps remove that barrier, giving young people who otherwise couldn’t afford to attend the opportunity to experience Hillary Outdoors.

Our mission is simple: get all 2,000 of them off the waitlist.

We won’t stop until the waitlist reaches zero. And they need your help.

OUR SUPPORTERS

A Hillary Outdoors programme is much more than accommodation and activities. The cost includes highly trained instructors, fit-for-purpose equipment, transport, facilities, food and the safety systems required to deliver real outdoor adventure experiences. The programme is deliberately designed around youth development through adventure, not simply recreation.

We work hard to keep programmes as affordable as possible, but reducing the price below the real cost of delivering a safe, high-quality programme isn’t sustainable. The Hillary Step Scholarship exists so that when price is the barrier, we can reduce the cost for the young person rather than reduce the quality of the experience.

Being a not-for-profit doesn’t mean we have an unlimited pool of money. We still need to fund our people, facilities, equipment, and programme delivery. The Hillary Step Scholarship is made possible through donations, grants and partnerships, and those funds are then used to support young people who demonstrate financial need.

Hillary Outdoors does not receive any government funding for our youth development programmes. Scholarship support is raised through our community of donors, trusts, foundations and partners. When funding isn’t available, either eligible young people end up waiting until more funding is secured, or they forgo their experience.

Yes. Adventure is the tool; people development is the purpose. Young people are put in situations where they have to work together, make decisions, try things that feel difficult and discover what they are capable of. They do this with the support of our instructors, who have the facilitation skills and qualifications. Hillary Outdoors measures outcomes including confidence, competence, character, connection, caring and contribution.
