Yes, you can certainly join the programme! This programme will follow along with the criteria to ensure the students enrolled with Duke of Edinburgh are signed off. This programme will not include other activities the way that our Hillary Holidays programmes do. 

No. To be signed off for a Duke of Edinburgh Journey, you need to be enrolled and set up through Duke of Edinburgh. You can do this on their website: https://dofehillary.org.nz/register/  

For Adventurous Journeys, yes, you can attend with friends. For Gold Residential, it’s recommended that you attend with a group of people you don’t know. 

No. Hillary Outdoors will supply these for you. 

Yes, you can attend just the qualifying journey; however, the programme cost is fixed. Reach out to our programme coordinators if this is you: bookings@hillaryoutdoors.co.nz 

No, you can’t be signed off using your previous practice journey if the mode of transport is different from your qualifying journey. However, you can complete a new practice journey and a qualifying journey through Hillary Outdoors. For the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award requirements, the mode of transport for both the practice and qualifying journeys must be the same to receive full sign-off. 

No, you must participate in the programme first. Post programme, the instructor will give you their name and email for you to send through your online record book to receive the sign off. 

At the end of your course, your instructor will give you their name and email address so you can send your online record book for sign-off. 

Our Duke of Edinburgh courses are usually run during the school holidays, but we also run additional courses if there is demand or for group bookings. Please get in contact with us, and we can see if we can make something work for you! 

Yes! Email us with your preferred dates, the number of people and which centre you’re interested in attending – bookings@hillaryoutdoors.co.nz   

Yes! Pre-Adventurous Journey training is included in our course. It is completed in tandem with the Qualifying Journey on days 1 & 2 of the course. 

Yes, but only if you are in a group of people that you don’t usually work with. Gold Residential courses are recommended to be done with people you don’t know. 

We may be able to sign off on your practice or qualifying journey. Please reach out to your teacher in charge of the trip, and they can talk with our Programme Coordinators to confirm. Most 5-day programmes include a 2-day expedition, which may count towards your Practice Journey (all levels) or your Bronze Qualifying Journey.  

Safety is our priority. Part of experiencing the outdoors in Aotearoa is adapting to the weather; trips may be modified as needed to suit the weather conditions and the safety of the group. If required, Hillary Outdoors may postpone the trip.
