Welcome back to Aotea Great Barrier Island

On 28 August 2022, after having to temporarily suspend our operation as a consequence of COVID, it was fabulous to welcome back Rosehill College students as the first participants to attend Hillary Outdoors Aotea.

Suspending operations on Aotea, Great Barrier Island was a decision not taken lightly by Hillary Outdoors Education Trust, and we would like to acknowledge Orama’s graciousness through the months of closure.  We truly appreciate the relationship with Orama.

Together Orama and Hillary Outdoors are supporting our youth participants through transformative experiences as Rosehill College experienced firsthand, and it’s great to get back to normal operations on Aotea, providing over 10,000 youth outdoor education days in the next 12 months alone.

Rosehill College took part in a five-day Through My Lens programme, where students experienced everything from paddleboarding, abseiling, and rock climbing to sea kayaking whilst integrating technology in an innovative and youth-driven initiative.  Through My Lens allows us to hear from youth firsthand and experience the programme through their eyes and words.

Not only does it help create lasting positive connections to the environment, but the programme also inspires students who may not otherwise experience the outdoors a chance to.

Rosehill College had an incredible week on Aotea, showing real character in undertaking the challenges that awaited them, conquering fears, and showing resilience and perseverance whilst also working as a cohesive team.

Being part of a student’s journey as they gain life-changing skills that help unleash their potential is why we have worked so hard to ensure the centre re-opened, and we cannot wait to welcome more students back to this piece of paradise in the months and years to come.
